Tree moving places the highest demands on planning, technology, and execution. Specially developed techniques allow even exceptionally large, healthy trees to be moved gently, precisely, and sustainably—even where traditional methods reach their limits.

After the move, all materials used are completely removed. Targeted vibrations settle the root ball into the new ground—a key requirement for stability and successful establishment. Tree moving requires experience, preparation, and time to ensure that a change of location becomes a long-term success.

Step-by-step guide

The tree moving process is divided into the following steps:

Preparation of technical expertise

The first step in the large-tree transplant process is the preparation of an expert report, which takes the following aspects into account:

  • The on-site situation
  • Suitability of the tree for transplanting
  • Feasibility of transplanting the tree
  • Root development and root structure of the tree
  • Individual assessment of conservation potential
  • Proposal for the transplant method

Based on this data, the following key parameters can be determined:

  • Root ball size (between 3x3m and 10x10m)
  • Transport feasibility and methods
Preparing the tree
  • Exposing the root ball by digging a trench down to below the main root zone
  • Stimulating fine-root development through supplementary measures: fertilising, watering, pruning the crown, and protecting the prepared root area.

The result of these preparatory measures is a compact and well-rooted root ball.

Excavating the work pit

Once the root ball is well-rooted thanks to the preparatory measures, the tree moving process can begin.

The first step involves digging a work pit, exposing the root ball and creating a transport path from one side. This creates a custom root ball tailored to the size and local conditions of the tree. Depending on the location, this work takes 3 to 10 working days.

Preparing the new location

Once the work pit has been excavated at the tree's original location, the new site is prepared. A root ball pit suitable for the tree and an access path are excavated here. This also provides the opportunity to straighten the tree's alignment by precisely adjusting the new subsoil.

Wrapping the root ball

For transport, our team ensures the protection of the root ball for both tree moving and superlarge tree moving. To achieve this, the root ball is reinforced all around with reusable materials, ensuring that the roots remain intact and fully preserved.

Lifting & Transport

The wrapped tree is now lifted and transported to its new location. Depending on the conditions and the transport route, the lifting and transport process can be carried out using a mobile crane or a customisable lifting system.

The result and the quality of the move are identical for both methods; selection criteria are primarily based on access and space requirements. For example, a mobile crane cannot be used if access is restricted or there is a lack of space at the site.

The situation is different with the lifting system, which is delivered in individual parts and can be used perfectly even in confined spaces. The lifting system shows its strengths primarily in superlarge tree moving near the existing location, whereas the mobile crane has the advantage for moves involving longer transport distances.

From a tree biology perspective, both moving methods are equally gentle on the tree.

When transplanting a superlarge tree, the tree transported to the new site is placed into the prepared pit. Next, all packaging materials and the subsoil are removed – this process is unique, as only with our system can voids be prevented and direct contact between the root ball and the ground at the new location be established.

Another plus: our packaging material is ecologically and economically sustainable, as it can be reused multiple times.

Aftercare and maintenance at the new location

The biggest overlap between tree moving and superlarge tree moving is the aftercare and maintenance at the new location. This is carried out in the same way for both types of tree moving.
