Hamburg Hohe Bleichen

This project is a so-called BID (Business Improvement District).
All property owners and merchants in the adjacent buildings joined forces to invest collectively in the design and enhancement of their district. The Hamburg-based landscape architecture firm Breimann & Bruun was responsible for the redesign.
After clearing the construction site, the area was reorganised with a clear design aesthetic.

The area was made accessible and inviting for pedestrians, with traffic space significantly reduced. Distributed across the square are 13 high-stemmed, 60-year-old Western red cedars (Thuja plicata) standing 9 to 10 metres tall, which were transported to Hamburg from a nursery in Bad Zwischenahn by the Opitz International team using a tree spade. In their new location, the cedars create a unique, urban aesthetic while simultaneously radiating calm and elegance.
The atmosphere in the square is also impressive after dark, when the characteristic trees are perfectly highlighted by spotlights embedded in the ground.
